  A Lost Soul From Jupiter

  Prologue

  16th November 1974

A prosperous time for scientific development for the human race, with the remodeling of the Arecibo Radio Scope, the human race had finally achieved a telescope powerful enough to be able to send radio frequencies some 25,000 light years away in hopes of coming in touch with other worldly life forms. It was not new that human kind had perspired with a dream to come in contact with living organism from another planet, but due to their limitations in technical prowess, performing such a feat was near impossible up until now…

“Greetings ladies and gentlemen, Today, I feel honored to have you all here in this ceremony at Arecibo technologies alongside with Carl Segan to mark another giant leap towards the discovery of the void for humanity. The following message which we are about to send into the vastness of the void is comprised of everything that represents the human race, including our numerical system, Atomic table, the structures of our DNA, a graphical representation of a human as well a graphical representation of the Solar System. We hope that if, the existence of any otherworldly creature is true, and then they will appreciate this message and in reply, give us some contextual signals confirming the rumors of their existence”

With this speech, the Arecibo fired up its beams and launched the message deep into space specifically targeting the 1679 binary encoded message towards the Global Star Cluster M13 in hopes of communicating with the third kind. The crowd cheered and clapped that day getting a sense of great pride unto their hearts, pride of being a part of such an historic event…

Another similar attempt was made during the year of 2008, but unfortunately, both of them garnered only negative results and they failed to perceive any kind of response from outer space.

  Chapter 1: The Big Day

Jacob didn’t get a good sleep last night, not because of he was being haunted by nightmares of otherworldly visions, but simply because he was excited. The immense joy of a long sought after dream slowly coming to life and transcending into the realms of physical existence is radiant to say the least. Jacob was suffering from what some people might like to call “Pre Event Excitement”. But what exactly was so exciting about this particularly gloomy day where Jacob’s porch was drowning under a barrage of hailstones?

A number of the hails came hitting hard into Jacob’s bedside window, working like a natural alarm system for him, immediately waking him up from his slumber. He was tired, his body was rickety and his eyes were still red from all the booze which he had last night. Sounds like he had quite a party don’t it? Well, he had his reasons; it was a good occasion for him to celebrate a little bit. While Jacob is naturally not a heavy drinker, last night he went completely all out while being under the influence of his lifelong pals Eddie and Erik. For the three of them, last night was like having a bachelor’s party, only with different motivations.

He took some time to get up from his bed and walked towards the washroom slowly like a zombie. His reflection made him seem as if he just came out from a grave, but that was just a few rinses of waters before, now he looked like a daisy fresh clean and pristine gentlemen. Jacob has this kind of “Secret Ability” in him that allowed him to change his outside appearance very quickly to suit the demands of his works. Today, his work needed him to be at the foremost tip top shape.

He came out opened his wardrobe to look at all his available options, he needed to choose the best one suitable for this occasion, even though ultimately his dress was going to get covered by his astronaut suit. Yes, Astronaut suit! This was not a make believe thing for a make-a-wish foundation, he was not going to a birthday party dressed up as an astronaut to play “hit-the-piñata” with the children. In fact, Jacob, along with his other two friends Erik and Eddie, were NASA’s front running Astronauts who were selected for the first ever mission to Jupiter.

The plans for this mission has been circling around the tables for a really long time, but this, right now seemed like the perfect moment to venture forth into making another feat of history and another feat for mankind. But this mission wasn’t simply going to be an excursion for the crew, no… The purpose of this mission was vague and kept inside a file labeled “Top Secret”, only a few personnel knew about this, and today during the mission briefing, these three fine gentlemen were going to be let in on the plan.

He wore his favorite tuxedo which his mother gave it to
him. Jacob was highly sentimental when it came to his mother who is now resting in heaven, his father on the other hand. Well, he didn’t really have a good relation with his father, and they pretty much preferred to live as far away from each other as possible. Part of the reason why Jacob holds such a grudge against his father was because he was partially the reason for his mother’s sickness and eventual death. Although he was not directly to blame, but it was hard for Jacob to accept the truth and let it slide by.

He took a moment for himself and exhaled form the top of his lungs, and made the toy space rocket swing to the other side that was hanging from the ceiling. His mother gave this toy to him while he was 6, from his early childhood Jacob was obsessed with everything related to space and his lifelong dream was to become an astronaut and roam around galaxies. All these years he accomplished that dream through video games, but today it was the real deal. He held the space rocket in his hand, and gave a soft smile.

Just as he was about to go out from home, his got fixed at a photo from his childhood. He was sitting around the neck of his mother while his mother was holding his hand. Those were the good old days her remembered. Things were better during that time. After his mother passed away, and he separated himself from his father, Jacob almost became a workaholic, had it not been for his friends, he would’ve turned insane years ago. It has been a really long time Jacob thought. He knew that mission such as the one where he was about to venture were risky and there always remained the possibility of something catastrophic happening. As much as he hated his father, he was by blood and fleshes still his father. So Jacob decided to take a moment, and call his old man…

  “Hello...”

Upon hearing his father’s voice after so many years, Jacob remained stunned for a while before eventually replying…

  “Dad, how are you..?”

The surge of emotion which was going through his father’s heart was indescribable, the joy which he felt and the tears of emotion which started to flow out.

They had a reasonably lengthy chat; Jacob apologized to him and told his father to forgive for all that he has done. After which Jacob shared with him the details of his mission. Upon hearing everything, during that brief moment where his father was getting to know the trails of success which his son was leaving behind, his heart started to pound with pride and honor. He gives his blessing to his son and told him…

“My dear son, don’t worry about me. I will be alright; a father can never stay angry at their own son. You have a bright future ahead of way, keep your head straight and focus on the goal. My prayers are always with you, fly off into the unknown and make the nation proud, make me proud…”

That was the most emotional few words which Jacob had heard from his father in a long time, in fact had it not been for these last few departing sentences, Jacob would’ve forgotten what it was like to be to feel the warm of love and care.

Being energized both physically and mentally, it was time for him to head to the office and enter the mission briefing room. Punctuality was not Jacob’s strongest suits, but he didn’t wanted to be late, at least not today…

  Chapter 2: The Debriefing

Jacob wasn’t one who always took thing seriously. He already had a lot of pain in his life to deal with and as for the rest of the things that were in his control, he tried to make the best out of it. Even while sitting in the debriefing room with Erik and Eddie, he was gossiping about the events of last night with them.

“Hey, remember that blonde chick with the blue eyes?”

  “You noticed her?” Said Eddie

Erik leaned a little bit forward towards Eddie “Just because Erik is pathetically and hopelessly single, did you assume that he was turning gay?”

Jacob exploded in laughter “Don’t worry, even if I do turn gay, you two maggots will be completely safe from being fondled by me…”

Just as their discussion was going to take a more serious turn, a voice from behind came floating up “Who is turning gay?”

It was a very dark and heavy voice; they immediately knew that it was the voice of their commander Sgt.Thomas. Now Thomas was man of very high and esteemed attire, always holding up a very strong aura of personality and attitude around him. He needed that because without it, it would’ve been neigh impossible for him to handle the mischievous brats like Jacob.

Thomas was a serious man and he didn’t really express his humor, but deep down inside him a very kind heart which all his colleagues knew. He was one of those kinds of leader who genuinely cared for the safety of his crew. But today, he was looking extra grim and more brooding than usual, in his hand he was carrying a fat file with at least three or four dozen dossiers and documents that were intended for their debriefing.

He twitched his mustache looking at Jacob “Now I know that giving all of these documents to you three would save a lot of time for me, but I also know for a fact that none of you are going to even read a single line of what’s written on it, so instead, let me tell you what this is all about.”

Thomas pressed a button under his desk to bring up a 3D hologram floating out from the middle of the desk which was displaying the details of what Thomas was talking about.

“Around 0200 hundred hours last night, our top Extra Terrestrial research received a distress call that originated from the dark side of Jupiter. They tried to trace the signal back to its origin, but whenever they were trying to get close, the messages got very jumbled up. While we are always getting such random signals from space, the reason why this one seemed to be highly peculiar was because this resembled to be a direct answer to the AMFE that was sent during the year of 2008”

Thomas passed his hand round the virtual globe to spin and show them the triangulated co-ordinates

“Gentlemen, this is the location where I am going to be sending you three people to investigate and of course, safely return with any information which you may find. Bear in mind that this is a highly sensitive mission and even if a single word of this were to get out, it would wreck complete havoc and chaos amongst the scientific community. We don’t want to raise any more hoaxes, you three are my best men and more importantly you three are the only ones I am willing to trust this mission with. It is a chance for you to go out there and make history, become the first persons ever to walk on the soil of Jupiter, and by God be the first people to make contact with extraterrestrial life form”

Jacob took a moment to raise his hand, “Sir, what if the creatures or umm…life forms turns out to be hostile and they begin to charge on our location and attack us?”

“Not to worry Jacob, that scenario has been thoroughly though out and you will be carrying a very good number of weapons and powerful ammunitions to fend the creatures off at least until you have safely returned inside your craft.” Said Thomas with very high confidence, “and besides, your ship will be re-enforced with an extra layer of aero-space armor making it impenetrable and strong enough to sustain a nuclear blast! Those aliens will have to think twice before even considering engaging you people.”

Thomas’s words were inspiring as ever as upon hearing everything, the team was now mentally prepared to start off their journey into the dark depressing void of space. None of them knew what dangers lay ahead of them and none of them had even the imagination to comprehend what it was going to be like up there. It was just a matter of hours now…

All three of them different motivations that propelled them to arrive at this point of their life…Jacob had his burning childhood ambition, Erik was out there to prove his worth and Eddie, well Eddie was doing all of these just because he was really enjoying himself.

Upon leaving the briefing room, they went to their own personal cabins to freshen up, take rest and suit up before the final launch hour was upon them. Everybody was tense now, and the hands of time were moving at a really faster pace than usual now…

  Chapter 3: The Launch

“You do realize that you look like a fat monkey in that suit right?” These were Ja
cob’s remarks to Eddie just before the countdown started. It was clear that all of them were scared, and it pretty normal for them to be scared. After all, there is a history of Rocket Ships going straight up into the air and slowly turning into a two faced sheikh kebab. But they were now at a point of no return, so the gossips were just helping them to ease the mood. The sound of the countdown then slowly started to echo inside their ears..

  T-10…..T-9…..9…..3…2….1...Blastoff!

And just like that the whole ship started to vibrate in a violent quake, launching itself upwards towards the sky from the Launchpad and making its way forward towards space. Jacob, Eddie and Erik all three of them were feeling the force that was exerted upon them making them stuck with the chair, none of them were able to move and all of them had just one thought in mind, they were going to space…

The year which we are talking about is in the near future of 2050, and technologies in interstellar travels has developed and advanced a whole lot. Where in there was a time when just the journey to the moon used to take years, now it only takes a couple of days. The journey to Jupiter was estimated to take about a week thank to the new hyper drive technology which the world still compares to have been directly pulled out from Star Trek. It doesn’t matter from where the tech has been pulled out really, as long as it’s helping humanity to thrust forward, its fine!

“Dang, would you look at that!”

Once the launch sequence was complete and the ship came to a stable condition, Eddie’s excitement wasn’t letting him stay put in the seat for one bit more. The zero gravity was not initiated and soon it would’ve been time for them to go into hyper sleep to save their resources and oxygen. But the three of them decided to have a little fun before closing their eyes shut.
